ABOUT US

Who We Are

At Trinity Presbyterian Church, we’re creating an experiment in becoming a transformed and transformative faith community.

Through Christ’s leading, we hope our values and prayers transform our lives and actions for the good of the world God loves.

  • Showing the love of Christ means sharing healthy food and groceries with about 1500 of our neighbours every Saturday through our Don’t Go Hungry food support program, together with support from many community partners.

  • Experiencing Christ among us in worship includes lively music, shared leadership, thoughtful preaching, and making sure our Zoom congregation, spread out from Burnaby to Kamloops to Edmonton and beyond, can engage with those who gather in person in the sanctuary.

  • We are learning how to be a congregation that takes reconciliation with Indigenous neighbours seriously and that welcomes everyone as an inclusive community of Christians.

  • Following Christ in how we build relationships among ourselves includes exercising collaborative discernment as a process for groups in the congregation so that all have a chance to be heard, even if the process takes extra time.

  • Being an experimental church means supporting the start-up of an additional witnessing community called Transform, which will help people connect to God through meaningful, worshipful experiences outdoors in God’s creation and through the making and sharing of meals.

  • We are looking forward to using our evolving IT skills in webinars, podcasts and social media to engage a wider, online community in conversations that matter about theology, caring, and compassion.

As we grow, we especially value flexibility, collaboration, inclusivity, vulnerability, and a willingness to try out new ideas - much needed in growing together during a pandemic and a good basis for continuing our new life together as one congregation. We repeatedly come back to a prayer expressed by one of our participants: “Help us Lord, not to be afraid to live larger and wider lives so that we can reflect your glory.”

Our History

Starting in 2018, members from the congregations of Gordon, Knox, and St. Aidan’s Presbyterian churches in New Westminster and Burnaby, BC gathered to discuss ways to collaborate in order to increase the vitality of our ministries. These congregations long had distinct and faithful ministries in which God’s people experienced community, vitality and meaning. By February 2020, our discussions had progressed to the point where we were ready to work together on becoming an amalgamated congregation.

As a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, we were challenged to figure out new ways to worship and helping us find ways to serve our neighbours. Our participatory, creative worship persevered and flourished on Zoom during COVID lockdowns and continues in a hybrid format of in-person and Zoom. Our Don’t Go Hungry food support program began in response to the pandemic in May 2020 as a compassionate outreach, and now currently feeds about 1500 people every week, with the help of over 260 community volunteers and organizations. Our continuing discussions and planning led to our official amalgamated on January 1, 2023 to become one congregation. We continue to discern God’s future and vision for our community.
